Frank Root papers, 1854 - 1926.

The collection includes articles and other writings on a wide variety of topics, particularly regarding Kansas history. Topics include Quindaro, Lincoln in Kansas, the territorial era, John Brown, postal stages and express routes, the Overland Trail and going to California, battle of the Arickaree, early Kansas newspapers, etc. There is also material regarding the California gold rush and Colorado, including early Weld County when Root lived and worked there. These reminiscences and other materials were not all written by Frank Root; other authors include C.C. Haynes, George Scovell, and George Schultz, among others. There are accounts regarding Root's trip to Oregon and notes for his memoirs. Also in the collection is incoming personal and professional correspondence, mostly from the 1870s-1910s, particularly from Kansans and Coloradoans; material for Root's and William Connelley's book "The Overland Stage to California: personal reminiscences and authentic history of the great overland stage line and pony express from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean"; an autograph book and Frank's 1867 diary; a movie script regarding the Overland Trail entitled "The Trail of the Argonauts"; and various personal financial account books, among other miscellaneous materials.

Frank Albert Root was born 3 July 1837 in Binghampton, New York. He left northeastern Pennsylvania in 1857, joining thousands of other pioneers moving to Kansas territory. He was briefly a journeyman printer in Lawrence before he moved to Atchison and became chief clerk of the post office there. He was an express messenger on the Overland Stage Line between Atchison and Denver in January, 1863.
